Hatsunuki
This traditional New Year's Day event is observed in Denton by members of The Dojo every year and for the past several years in Houston by members of Clear Lake Iaido.
Below is a description.
Hatsu Nuki is the term for first draw of the year and is usually performed on Jan. 1 at dawn. In Japan it is done at a Shinto shrine and each participant performs ippon me mae to the sensei while being blessed by a Shinto priest.... we'll forego the blessing, but will endeavor to do it with the same spirit of solemnity that it is done in Japan.
In Japan, the ritual is followed by a breakfast and HOT sake toast to the new year.
...Be dressed in hakama and uwagi (top).
Also, please feel free to wear as much under your iaido clothes as you like... layering works well (long johns). Also, please wear socks (as many layers as you'd like) and some kind of slippers that you can slip in and out of easily.
If it is raining or sleeting, we'll move to the Dojo for the ritual (with heater :)).
